I will never forget the day I invited John Smith, the leader of the Australian Christian Motorcycle Club, The God Squad, to come and speak to a group of youth leaders who had gathered from across Australia for a conference I had arranged.
John spoke on the calling of Moses by God at a burning bush in the wilderness.
“There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. So Moses thought, ‘I will go over and see this strange sight – why the bush does not burn up.’”
And it was there that God commissioned Moses to go to Pharoah to bring His people out of Egypt.
The theme of John’s message that day was, “Don’t burn out, burn on.” And he explained how increasing anxiety and burnout in our country was due to a lack of meaning and identity in the heart of Australians. The burnout epidemic was not so much the result of external causes but due to an internal vacuum in people’s hearts, which they were trying to fill with counterfeits that led to a poverty of spirit.
Just like a heated tin can collapses when the external air pressure becomes greater than the air pressure inside the can, so it is in life that when the pressures of life become greater than our inner resources, so burnout occurs.
And so God was giving Moses a vivid lesson when He called to him from within the burning bush. “Moses saw that though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up.” Moses, I am calling you to a challenge that will demand all of you and when you fill your life with my Spirit and live out my purposes, please know that you will burn on, but you will never burn out.
These words have stayed with me throughout my life. And through the most difficult seasons of my life, I have experienced the truth of the words of Jesus, “My (sustaining) grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9. His internal presence has always been greater than my external pressures.
I am burning on without burning out. How about you?
