The Danger of Being ACTIVITY CENTRED Rather Than GOD CENTRED

One of the great dangers in living the Christian life occurs when we become activity centred instead of God centred. For God’s ways are not always our ways.

In Acts chapter 8 we read of a great persecution breaking out against the church in Jerusalem resulting in many of the Christians being scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. Philip found himself in a city in Samaria where he proclaimed Jesus with amazing results.

For twenty years Douglas Hyde was a member of the Communist Party in England before he renounced Communism and joined the Catholic Church. He then wrote a book called Dedication and Leadership to explain what Christians can learn from the Communist’s attitudes and methods.

One day he was conducting a leadership training course for a group of Communists in London and ended his lecture by saying that the Communist Party could take anyone who was willing to be trained in leadership and turn them into a leader, The one qualification was that the would-be leader must be willing to be trained.

Sometime after I had finished pastoring in my last church, as I was walking through my neighbourhood, I sense the Lord impressing upon me these words, “Don’t forget Rod, that you are still a pastor in your neighbourhood.” These words have stayed with me and brought to mind the words of Jesus when He said we are the light of the world and the salt of the earth and His witnesses in the world in which we live, in our neighbourhood, school, workplace, local shopping centre, extended family or wherever the world in which we live takes us.

The issue of identity is possibly the most important issue leaders have to resolve if they are going to be rightly motivated to serve in their role.
This was recently brought home to me when I watched an unusual video clip of a teacher in his classroom.
