A palliative care nurse by the name of Bronnie Ware was highly qualified to write the book, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. Interestingly, the number one regret she wrote was, “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”

And in these words, I was reminded of how being a “people pleaser” is one of the reasons why we can live our lives letting good things get in the way of the best things.

My attitude to life was radically changed when I developed the conviction that in all of life I always had an audience of One. It meant that I was never alone, or that my standard of excellence could be compromised on unimportant occasions, or I could ignore the law of the land as long as I wasn’t in danger of being detected, or that integrity wasn’t a priority if the cashier had miscalculated my refund.

“No Christian makes much progress in the Christian life until they realise that life is more chaotic and tragic than orderly.”
Ever since the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, these words of Oswald Chambers have helped to define the world in which we have been called to live and serve.
